Empowering Liberia’s Schools: Ministry of Education Holds Crucial Meeting on Financial Management

(Monrovia, Liberia – September 20, 2024)

In a pivotal effort to enhance financial oversight within the education sector, the Ministry of Education convened an emergency meeting today with public school principals and administrators. The meeting focused on the implementation of new financial regulations designed to strengthen the management of school funds.

The discussions began with an emphasis on ensuring strict adherence to the Ministry’s updated financial guidelines, which aim to promote accountability and transparency in all financial transactions within public schools. Acting Deputy Minister for Administration, Hon. Jonathan Jackson, underscored the critical importance of accurate documentation of school fees, making it clear that this practice is now mandatory. He informed participants that a portion of the funds collected would be allocated to address key challenges faced by schools across the nation.

Minister Jackson announced a revision of the previous practice regarding the transfer of funds to the Ministry via mobile money services. Going forward, schools will be required to maintain accounts with commercial banks, with four designated signatories: the principal, CEO, Vice Principal for Administration (VPA), and the registrar. This initiative is intended to enhance oversight and safeguard the integrity of financial transactions within the school system.

Furthermore, Minister Jackson called for the submission of comprehensive budget projections for the fiscal year 2024/2025, highlighting the significance of sound financial planning and effective resource allocation.

Acting Minister of Education, Hon. Amos Armah Fully, addressed the attendees, emphasizing the vital role of qualified professionals in shaping the educational landscape of Liberia. He announced the introduction of a rigorous vetting process for school principals, ensuring that only competent and dedicated leaders are entrusted with managing public schools. Minister Fully reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to elevating the quality of education through strong leadership and effective policy implementation.

In support of these initiatives, Assistant Minister for Basic and Secondary Education, Hon. Abba G. Karnga, passionately advocated for adherence to best practices and ethical standards within schools. His message reinforced the collective responsibility of all stakeholders to create a conducive learning environment that meets high educational standards.

The meeting also featured the presentation of the 2024/2025 reporting templates and procedures, designed to streamline administrative processes and reinforce transparency in school management. This initiative is part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to ensure efficient and effective governance in the education sector.
