Liberia Demonstrates Commitment to Advancing STEM Education at mEducation Alliance Symposium

Monrovia, Liberia – November 27, 2024: The Ministry of Education, Liberia, proudly participated in the mEducation Alliance STEM Symposium, held from October 1-3, 2024, at George Mason University, followed by a members’ day on October 4 at the World Bank in Washington, D.C.
This distinguished event brought together global educators, policymakers, and innovators to discuss strategies for advancing STEM education.
Liberia’s participation highlighted the nation’s strong commitment to enhancing STEM education, with key representatives including Deputy Minister for Instruction, Amos Fully, and Assistant Minister for Science, Technology, Vocational, Special, and Inclusive Education, Hon. Nathaniel K. Cisco, who delivered a keynote address on integrating STEM into national curricula using affordable and locally sourced materials.
The collaboration between the Ministry of Education and the Practical Education Network (PEN) has played a crucial role in equipping teachers with the skills and resources to deliver engaging, hands-on STEM lessons.

Dr. Heather Beem, CEO and Founder of PEN, presented the success and scalability of this model at the symposium, emphasizing its impact on promoting STEM education across Liberia. Sangay Freeman, Director of STEM Education at the Ministry, also participated in discussions, focusing on Liberia’s partnership with Learning Upgrade to introduce educational technology (EdTech) in secondary schools, further supporting the integration of digital tools to enhance STEM education.
The symposium also provided Liberia’s education leaders with a valuable opportunity to engage with global experts and organizations, including UNICEF, Purdue University, and Dell Technologies.
The World Bank’s special members’ day on October 4 facilitated the exchange of best practices for expanding access to STEM education and exploring opportunities for international collaboration. Liberia’s active participation in this event underscores its dedication to fostering an inclusive and sustainable STEM education ecosystem for future generations.
