Liberia Engages Global Education Leaders on Sustaining Gains from AU Year of Education 2024, with Emphasis on Disability Inclusion

Paris, France – April 8, 2025

The Honorable Minister of Education of the Republic of Liberia has reaffirmed the country’s unwavering commitment to advancing quality, inclusive, and sustainable education across the continent—ensuring that no child is left behind, including children with disabilities—during a high-level dialogue with UNESCO leadership.

Speaking during the Q&A session with the Director-General of UNESCO, the Honorable Minister posed a forward-looking question on behalf of Liberia, emphasizing the importance of building on the progress made during the African Union Year of Education 2024.

“What are the key outcomes and lessons learned from the African Union Year of Education 2024? Additionally, how does UNESCO intend to sustain this momentum and further strengthen its support for education in Africa within the framework of the African Union Decade of Education? Liberia also lauds UNESCO’s efforts—under your leadership—in the support of Priority Africa, as well as the Organization’s efforts in the development of a strategy on disability inclusion aligning with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.”

This question reflects Liberia’s strategic interest in ensuring that the gains of 2024 translate into lasting impact—particularly through inclusive policies and practices that address the needs of all learners, including those with disabilities, in alignment with the African Union Decade of Education (2024–2033).

The Honorable Minister also highlighted the critical role of UNESCO’s continued collaboration with African nations in addressing key priorities such as foundational learning, digital education, teacher training, financing for education systems, and inclusive education for children and youth with disabilities.

Liberia remains a strong advocate for collective action and regional cooperation to achieve the goals of the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA), with a firm belief that true progress can only be achieved when educational systems are inclusive and equitable for every learner.

The Ministry of Education reiterates its dedication to working hand-in-hand with UNESCO and AU partners to ensure that every African child—regardless of ability, background, or location—has access to quality education that empowers them to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.
