Liberian Minister of Education, Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, Secures Major STEM Education Initiative at UNESCO’s 220th Executive Board Session

Paris, France – October 15, 2024

During the 220th session of the UNESCO Executive Board, Liberia’s Minister of Education, Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, secured a transformative initiative aimed at advancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education in Liberia. This pilot program, in collaboration with the Abdullah Al-Fozan International Foundation for STEM Education from Saudi Arabia, will provide training for more than 20 Liberian teachers and significantly enhance students’ technical and creative skills.

The Al-Fozan Foundation will fund this initiative, which involves UNESCO experts traveling to Liberia to train teachers in designing educational programs that foster teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving using Artificial Intelligence (AI). The program incorporates Coglabs, utilizing second-hand phones with Infinix technology, to inspire young students to explore AI and robotics, even in areas without reliable internet access. This project aims to provide Liberia’s next generation with hands-on experiences in AI, robotics, and machine learning, ensuring students have the skills to thrive in a technology-driven world.

The pilot project is set to launch in February 2025 and is designed as a sustainable model that can be reused and expanded in schools across the country, allowing students to develop practical, future-ready skills with minimal resources.

In addition to the Al-Fozan collaboration, the Minister is exploring the use of Google Teachable Machines, a platform enabling teachers to create AI models without internet connectivity. Using external batteries to power and reboot the system, these tools will bring advanced technology to classrooms, offering students innovative learning opportunities in even the most resource-limited settings.

Dr. Jallah’s dedication to STEM education has earned her an invitation to the High-Level Ministerial Meeting on Transforming Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in Africa, taking place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from November 26-28, 2024. This meeting, organized by UNESCO in collaboration with the African Union, will focus on preparing Africa for the 21st century by advancing STEM education and fostering technological innovation across the continent.

Dr. Jallah’s efforts to elevate Liberia’s education system through strategic international partnerships, particularly in the areas of AI and STEM, mark a significant step toward equipping Liberian students with the skills necessary for success in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
