Liberia’s Education Sector Strengthened: 2,000 Voluntary Teachers to Join Government Payroll in Landmark Initiative

Monrovia, Liberia – March 25, 2025

The Ministry of Education has announced a groundbreaking initiative to integrate 2,000 voluntary teachers onto the government payroll, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s commitment to strengthening its education system and improving teacher welfare.

This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the Civil Service Agency (CSA) and the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, reflects the government’s dedication to recognizing the invaluable contributions of educators and fostering a more sustainable teaching profession.

Addressing the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT) press briefing, Minister of Education, Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, emphasized the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that teachers receive fair compensation for their service. She outlined that the transition process will be based on a rigorous merit-based evaluation, assessing credentials, attendance, and qualifications to uphold transparency and excellence in the education system.

Further strengthening teacher support, Minister Jallah announced that 9,271 qualified teachers have already received salary top-ups, reinforcing the government’s broader efforts to enhance educators’ welfare and professional recognition.

She commended the Senior Management Team of the Ministry for their dedication to advancing policies that uplift teachers and improve the nation’s education standards.

In addition to teacher welfare, the Ministry is actively advancing the “One Child, One Chair” Presidential Initiative, a transformative program aimed at providing adequate classroom seating for students across Liberia.

Minister Jallah confirmed that procurement processes are already underway through a strategic partnership with the CSA, ensuring a better learning environment for students nationwide.

Reaffirming Liberia’s commitment to inclusive and equitable education, Minister Jallah highlighted the Ministry’s ongoing initiatives to promote girls’ education and expand opportunities for children with disabilities.

“Quality education must be accessible to every child, regardless of background or ability,” she asserted.

The Ministry of Education remains steadfast in its mission to empower teachers, enhance educational infrastructure, and promote inclusive learning, marking a new era of progress in Liberia’s education sector.
