Liberia’s Ministry of Education Secures €2 Million EU–UNICEF Grant to Strengthen Education Data Systems

Monrovia, Liberia – April 16, 2025

The Ministry of Education has signed a €2 million grant agreement with the European Union (EU) and UNICEF to upgrade Liberia’s Education Management Information System (EMIS), reinforcing the nation’s shift toward data-driven educational planning.

At the signing ceremony in Monrovia, Minister of Education Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah hailed the grant as a bold step toward transparency, accountability, and improved learning outcomes. “Quality data enables informed decisions that benefit every student, teacher, and school,” she said.

The initiative focuses on expanding data capacity in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), tracking enrollment, retention, employment, and resource use. It also strengthens collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Planning Director Mr. Abdallah M. Housseini identified outdated curricula, limited funding, and weak assessments as key challenges, affirming EMIS as a cornerstone for equitable, inclusive, and globally aligned education.

Development partners including UNESCO, UNIDO, the World Bank, and UNICEF endorsed the initiative’s impact on planning, service delivery, and public trust.

EU Ambassador Nona Deprez reaffirmed EU support, noting over $40 million invested in Liberia’s TVET sector. “Reliable data drives results. Every euro must count,” she emphasized.

The Ministry deeply thanks the EU and UNICEF for their enduring partnership in advancing education for all Liberians.
