Mastercard Foundation Champions Education Reform with New Leaders in Teaching Program in Liberia

The Mastercard Foundation is pleased to announce a significant meeting today aimed at designing a Leaders in Teaching (LIT) program to transform educational opportunities for young people in Liberia.
This initiative underscores the Foundation’s commitment to empowering youth across Africa and Indigenous communities in Canada through its Young Africa Works strategy, which aims to ensure that 30 million young people gain access to dignified employment.
Following successful implementations in Rwanda (2018) and Ghana (2021), the LIT initiative focuses on four key pillars:

1. Recruiting high-quality teachers, with an emphasis on women and those in rural and STEM fields.
2. Training educators in essential 21st-century skills and digital literacy.
3. Enhancing school leadership through mentorship and certification.
4. Motivating the teaching profession through recognition and professional development.
To date, the LIT program has positively impacted over 550,000 students and supported more than 42,000 teachers and education leaders, with an investment of $65 million and an additional $80 million allocated for Ghana.
Today’s meeting will engage local, regional, and global stakeholders in co-designing the LIT program for Liberia. Objectives include gathering insights on educational priorities, sharing findings from a diagnostic report, and developing innovative strategies for teacher workforce development.

The Mastercard Foundation is dedicated to creating pathways to opportunity for young people in Liberia. This meeting marks a pivotal step toward fostering collaboration and implementing a comprehensive approach to teacher development that will benefit future generations.
