Professor Ansu D. Sonii Sr., has spent four decades in the classroom providing instructional services at the primary, junior secondary and tertiary levels in the Republic of Liberia. For the most part of the years indicated, he served particularly at the University of Liberia (UL), the Nation’s Premier Institution of Tertiary education. For two years while at the University, he also served at the Stella Maris Polytechnic as an adjunct faculty. Enrolled as Instructor on the faculty of Accounting at the University in the early 1980s, the now Minister of Education was privileged to have been appointed to several key instructional and administrative posts during thirty (30) years of continuous service at that Institution. Commencing as Chair of the Program in Accounting, he was appointed Dean of the College of Business and Public Administration, Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs and Vice President for Administration respectively, the position he held until retirement in December 2014.

Post retirement, Prof. Sonii was engaged at the University of Liberia as Adjunct faculty with assignment in the Graduate School of Business Administration, teaching financial and advanced accounting intermittently, until his appointment as Minister of Education in February 2018, by the President of Liberia, H. E. George M. Weah.

Commencing as Chair of the Program in Accounting, he was appointed Dean of the College of Business and Public Administration, Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs and Vice President for Administration respectively, the position he held until retirement in December 2014. Post retirement, Prof. Sonii was engaged at the University of Liberia as Adjunct faculty with assignment in the Graduate School of Business Administration, teaching financial and advanced accounting intermittently, until his appointment as Minister of Education in February 2018, by the President of Liberia, H. E. George M. Weah.

While fully an academic, Prof Sonii is in fact an Accountant by training, having earned his Undergraduate education in accounting at the UL in 1975 and the Master of Science in Accounting at Adelphi University, Long Island, USA in Fall 1980. He’s a CPA, member of the Liberian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (LICPA) in good standing and a retired Partner of PKF Liberia (CPAs) following 25 years of practice with that Institution. PKF- Liberia, a Firm of Accountants and Business Advisors, is a member firm of PKF International of the UK with independent practices in over 100 countries of the world. As a dual career personality, Professor Sonii has successfully managed his 40-year professional history, shared concomitantly between the practices of accounting and teaching primarily in the Republic of Liberia.

Preceding his 25 years as a Partner at PKF- Liberia, Minister Sonii occupied several senior financial management positions at a number of corporate institutions in Liberia. Amongst them include, the Liberia Tractor and Equipment Company (Libtraco), Liberia Produce and marketing Corporation (LPMC), the Mesurado Group of Companies and General Auditing Office now General Auditing Commission (GAC). However, had it not been the effects of the civil war, many of these entities would had remained functional up to date.

The Liberia Minister of Education, is a Dynamic, detail-oriented CPA, with wide range of experience in public and corporate accounting practice. Equally, He is a seasoned Academic Administrator and Lecturer having experienced the respective rank changes in academia from instructor to professor over a period of 25 years, preceded by several years of teaching services at the basic school level. In recognition of these dedicated services to the Republic of Liberia with proven credentials and impactful outcomes for decades, the Minister was in 2018, conferred with the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters (Honoris Causa) by one of the outstanding Local Universities in Liberia, The Starz College of Science and Technology.

Minister Sonii is a Liberian, born in December 1950 in Margibi County unto Liberian parents. He is a member of the Governing Council of the Ruling Coalition for Democratic Change of Liberia, having earlier served on the Platform Committee of the Coalition. He’s a Seventh- Day Adventist Christian, married for nearly 39 years to Mrs. Adoley M. Sonii, Country Director, Liberia Office of Sightsavers International until August 31, 2019. The couple is blessed with four biological children and three adopted ones, all of whom are adults, settled with graduate education in professions of their respective choices.
