Minister Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah Leads National Observance of World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2025

Promoting Dignity, Equality, and Opportunity for Every Liberian Girl

On May 28, 2025, Liberia joined the global community in commemorating World Menstrual Hygiene Day under the international theme, “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” and the national focus, “Period-Friendly Schools.”

The official observance was held at C.H. Dewey High School in Tubmanburg, Bomi County, and was led by Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, Liberia’s Minister of Education, in a bold demonstration of the nation’s commitment to ensuring girls’ dignity, well-being, and continued access to education.

In her keynote address, Minister Jallah described menstrual hygiene as a fundamental human right, vital to advancing equality and educational opportunities for every Liberian girl.

“Menstrual hygiene must never hinder a girl’s right to education,” Minister Jallah affirmed.

“This is about restoring dignity, building confidence, and unlocking potential. We must stand together to empower every girl, everywhere.”

She called on parents, school leaders, and development partners to prioritize the creation of safe, inclusive, and stigma-free learning environments, where girls are protected from fear, shame, or disruption during their education.

The program featured emotional testimonies from female students, who underscored the urgent need for improved Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities and enhanced menstrual health education across schools nationwide.

In a special statement, Hon. Sona T. Sesay, Assistant Minister for Student Personnel Services, reaffirmed the Ministry’s full commitment to promoting health, gender equity, and academic excellence, emphasizing that no girl must be left behind due to menstruation-related challenges.

Menstrual Hygiene is a Right.

Education is the Foundation.

Empowering Girls is the Future.
