Minister of Education Celebrates Prof. Dr. Layli Maparyan’s Inauguration as 16th President of the University of Liberia

A historic moment in Liberia’s higher education sector was marked over the weekend with the inauguration of Prof. Dr. Layli Maparyan as the 16th President of the University of Liberia (UL). The ceremony, held at the Fendall Campus, was attended by a range of dignitaries, including Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, Minister of Education.
In her remarks at the event, Minister Jallah expressed her strong support for the new leadership of the University of Liberia. She emphasized the crucial role of youth development, human capacity building, and empowerment in advancing Liberia’s educational framework. Dr. Jallah reaffirmed her commitment to collaborating closely with Prof. Dr. Maparyan to drive forward Liberia’s educational agenda.
The inauguration also featured the conferral of an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree upon His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., President of Liberia, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to national development and his enduring connection with the University of Liberia.
Prof. Dr. Layli Maparyan, an accomplished academic and an advocate for women’s rights, brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She is the Executive Director of the Wellesley Centers for Women (WCW) and a Professor of Africana Studies at Wellesley College. Her leadership is grounded in a deep commitment to education, gender equality, and social justice, values that resonate with the mission of the University of Liberia. Her appointment signals a promising future for the institution and its role in shaping Liberia’s development.

The inauguration was attended by key government officials, university leadership, faculty, and international partners, underscoring the broad support for the University of Liberia’s new chapter. The event highlighted the transformative potential of education in fostering national development and advancing inclusive progress in Liberia.
