Minister of Education Welcomes WAEC Council to Liberia, Calls for Strengthened Commitment to Educational Excellence

Monrovia, Liberia – March 17, 2025

The Minister of Education, Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, has officially welcomed the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Council to Liberia, marking a significant moment for the nation’s education sector.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Education, Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, brought together distinguished education leaders to discuss key priorities for advancing learning outcomes across the region.

In her address, Minister Jallah expressed pride in Liberia hosting this year’s prestigious assembly, underscoring both the challenges and opportunities facing the country’s education system.

While acknowledging that Liberia is not shortlisted for any accolades or prizes this year, she described this as a call to action—an opportunity to intensify efforts toward achieving greater academic excellence.

“We must invest our time and resources in empowering our students and educators, ensuring that Liberia’s educational system becomes more competitive and resilient,” Minister Jallah stated.

She urged teachers, students, and policymakers to unite in a shared commitment to measurable progress that would elevate Liberia’s standing within the WAEC community.

Professor Thomas B. R. Yormah, Chairman of the WAEC Council, reaffirmed the council’s commitment to fostering regional educational development.

He highlighted the importance of collaboration among Member Countries, recognizing WAEC’s historic role in advancing knowledge assessment across West Africa.

“For over seven decades, WAEC has remained a pillar of academic integrity, and we are excited to convene in Liberia this year,” Professor Yormah remarked.

He emphasized the need for stable funding and financial commitments from all Member Countries, ensuring WAEC’s continued ability to fulfill its mandate.

The 73rd WAEC Regional Annual Conference, which officially commences this afternoon, will feature a series of discussions, workshops, and strategic dialogues aimed at enhancing educational standards and fostering stronger regional cooperation. This pivotal event provides a platform for key stakeholders to deliberate on the future of education across West Africa.

Minister Jallah concluded her address by reaffirming Liberia’s unwavering commitment to educational transformation and deeper collaboration with WAEC.

She expressed confidence that, through sustained partnerships and shared dedication, the region can achieve remarkable progress in education.

The WAEC delegation to Liberia includes distinguished leaders such as Professor Thomas B. R. Yormah, Chairman of the WAEC Council, and Alhaji Pateh Bah, WAEC Council Registrar.

Other notable delegates include government nominees from various Member Countries: Mr. Louise M. Mendy (The Gambia), Prof. Ernest K. Davies (Ghana), Hajiya Binta Abdulkadir (Nigeria), and Mr. Edward Kpakra (Sierra Leone).

Additionally, Mr. Demianus G. Ojijeogu, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC Headquarters, Accra, is also part of the delegation.

The meeting was attended by Minister Jallah, her Senior Management Team, and Mr. Dale Garmonded Gbotoe, Head of WAEC-Liberia, along with other high-level education officials.
