Monrovia, Liberia – July 30, 2024

The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with esteemed partners, has officially inaugurated the Enrollment Drive Committee, an initiative aimed at increasing enrollment rates among school-age children throughout Liberia.

During the official launch event, Minister of Education Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah praised UNICEF and other partnering institutions for their unwavering commitment to supporting the Ministry’s mission. Dr. Jallah emphasized the significance of this collective effort in addressing the critical issue of low school enrollment rates. The “Back to my Classroom” campaign, highlighted by Dr. Jallah, is a crucial component of this initiative, designed to enhance enrollment efforts in Liberian schools, particularly addressing the alarming dropout rates.

Assistant Minister for Basic & Secondary Education, Abba G. Karnga, the lead campaigner and driving force behind this initiative, emphasized the critical importance and timeliness of the Enrollment Drive Movement. Minister Karnga noted that this campaign aligns with the overarching Education Sector Plan and the ARREST agenda. He unveiled a comprehensive three-year strategic plan for the Enrollment Drive Movement, with the initial phase set to commence in Gbarpolu, Bomi, Grand Gedeh, Grand Bassa, Rivercess, and River Gee Counties.

Minister Karnga outlined the key objectives of the campaign: to highlight the declining school enrollment, establish a sustainable system to bring all school-age children back to school, raise awareness of the benefits of education for citizens and stakeholders, implement a system to track children, strengthen school, community, district, and county mechanisms for enrollment and retention, enhance the use of multimedia platforms for promoting social and behavioral change, and communicate messages on age-appropriate enrollment, immunization, and birth registration.

In her remarks, President Pro Tempore Madam Nyomblee Karnga Lawrence of the Liberian Senate, along with legislators from Grand Kru, River Gee, and Grand Gedeh Counties, and representatives from the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bridge Liberia, and the Crusader for Peace, praised the Ministry and its partners for this commendable initiative to enhance school enrollment rates.

The collaborative efforts of all involved entities were hailed as exemplars of proactive and transformative action towards improving the educational landscape in Liberia, reflecting the nation’s enduring spirit of unity and progress.
