Ministry of Education Launches National Youth Service Program Initiative
August 1, 2024, Monrovia, Liberia
The Ministry of Education has initiated the establishment of the National Youth Service Program of Liberia, focusing on youth development through a structured national service framework. This initiative was launched during a stakeholder engagement dialogue aimed at outlining the path forward.
Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, the Minister of Education, led the dialogue, emphasizing the program’s potential to significantly impact Liberia’s future. Dr. Jallah highlighted that Liberia is on the brink of a transformative period, where collective efforts will result in a more empowered, skilled, and proactive youth population.
During the one-day dialogue at the Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, Dr. Jallah announced the formation of a Technical Working Group. This group, comprising professionals, will assess current resources and design a comprehensive policy framework that aligns with national visions and obligations. This step is crucial for realizing a program aimed at nurturing and empowering Liberia’s youth, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to the country’s development.
Dr. Jallah expressed deep gratitude to all stakeholders for their commitment, determination, contributions, and invaluable services. She noted that these efforts create a platform fostering the growth and development of young people in the education sector. “The collaboration and dedication of all individuals involved play a crucial role in shaping the future of our youth and creating opportunities for their success,” she stressed.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Jallah emphasized the importance of collective effort in creating an environment that empowers young people to thrive and excel in their educational pursuits.
Honorable Sona T. Sesay, Assistant Minister for the Bureau of Student Personnel Services, highlighted the significance of the National Youth Service Program. Instituted under the Education Reform Act of 2011, specifically detailed in Section 3.3.11, this initiative addresses the critical issue of youth involvement in substance abuse, particularly narcotics, which hinders their personal growth and societal contribution.
Minister Sesay stressed that the youth represent the future leadership of Liberia and must be adequately educated, skilled, and trained. She outlined the program’s objectives, which include instilling in Liberian youths a profound sense of nationalism, patriotism, and civic responsibility. Through this initiative, the minds of Liberian youths will be nurtured, providing them with essential education and skills training to enhance their employability and foster a culture of service to their country.
The National Youth Service Program is envisioned as a vital tool in shaping a generation of empowered and responsible citizens, equipping them with the necessary tools to contribute positively to Liberia’s development. Minister Sesay emphasized that the program targets a wide range of individuals, including high school graduates, graduates of universities, colleges, technical and vocational institutions, as well as local and bilateral scholarship students who are enrolled in or have graduated from higher education institutions.
Representatives from various institutions commended the Ministry for its significant efforts in developing the National Youth Service Program. They highlighted the importance of forward-thinking and robust measures to ensure the longevity and effectiveness of this initiative.
