Monrovia, Liberia – July 22, 2024-
The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Education, is steadfast in its commitment to advancing educational initiatives aimed at improving the quality and effectiveness of the national education system.
During a recent press briefing at the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism (MICAT), Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, the Minister of Education, highlighted the strategic reforms being implemented to address key challenges within the education sector.
Dr. Jallah outlined several critical focus areas, including the enhancement of Girls and Inclusive Education, upgrading the qualifications of teachers and administrative staff, expanding Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs, strengthening monitoring and supervision mechanisms, improving educational infrastructure, and implementing school feeding programs.
Acknowledging the obstacles faced by the Ministry, Dr. Jallah cited delays in school construction projects, outstanding scholarship payments, insufficient operational support for schools, high wage bills, a shortage of qualified teachers, inadequate resources, and salary discrepancies among staff.
Despite these challenges, Dr. Jallah emphasized the significant strides made possible by the recent increase in the Ministry’s national budget approved by the legislature. She underscored the ongoing reforms and advancements at every tier of the Ministry, noting that the recent County Tour organized by the Ministry has been instrumental in highlighting critical challenges in the education sector.
Minister Jallah’s dedication to improving the education system is evident through these efforts and initiatives. It is crucial to support these endeavors collectively to enhance the quality of education and opportunities for all individuals within the education sector.
The Ministry’s vigilance in identifying and addressing pressing issues is essential for sustainable progress and development. By acknowledging existing challenges and actively seeking solutions, the Ministry is taking proactive steps toward fostering a more inclusive and effective education system.
Dr. Jallah disclosed that several critical initiatives are currently underway within the education sector. These include the upcoming Joint Education Sector Review meeting, the commencement of the annual school census, the formulation of a revamped Teacher Workforce Recruitment Strategy, the implementation of the National Youth Service Program, and the creation of a standardized Accelerated Learning Curriculum.
The Joint Education Sector Review Dialogue, set to convene soon, will serve as a platform for key stakeholders to collectively assess the current state of the education system and strategize future improvements. The annual school census will provide crucial data for educational planning and resource allocation. The redesigned Teacher Workforce Recruitment Strategy aims to enhance both the quality and quantity of educators in schools. The National Youth Service Program seeks to engage young people in nation-building activities, while the standardized Accelerated Learning Curriculum aims to provide efficient learning pathways for students.
These initiatives signify a concerted effort towards advancing inclusivity and excellence in the education sector, underscoring the government’s commitment to fostering a robust and equitable educational environment.
In conclusion, Minister Jallah expressed deep gratitude for the invaluable contributions made by various donors and organizations towards enhancing outcomes in secondary education. She specifically highlighted the pivotal role played by the European Union in bolstering TVET programs, which are crucial for preparing the youth for the modern workforce’s challenges. Dr. Jallah also commended UNICEF for their steadfast commitment to aligning their initiatives with the Ministry of Education’s priorities.
In acknowledging these collaborative efforts, Dr. Jallah underscored the importance of building strong partnerships to drive sustainable progress in the education sector.
