Ministry of Education Commemorates 178th National Flag Day with Patriotic Display of Unity, Excellence, and Civic Pride
Monrovia, Liberia – August 26, 2025

The Ministry of Education joined the nation in commemorating the 178th Anniversary of National Flag Day under the theme “The Flag We Raise, The Values We Uphold.” This year’s celebration highlighted patriotism, unity, and civic responsibility as core values of Liberia’s democratic tradition.
The day began with an inspiring parade at the Barclay Training Center (BTC), where hundreds of students proudly marched in ceremonial attire. The program later transitioned to the Centennial Pavilion, bringing together government officials, educators, development partners, civil society, and students.
President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. was represented by Minister of Justice, Cllr. N. Oswald Tweh, who urged Liberians to demonstrate patriotism through accountability, peace, and good governance.

Keynote Speaker Dr. Cllr. Jallah A. Barbu called on Liberians to recommit to national unity, civic responsibility, and moral integrity, emphasizing the importance of justice and reconciliation through the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court.
Acting Minister of Education, Atty. Nyekeh Y. Forkpa, reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to an inclusive and equitable education system. He outlined priorities such as:
1. Equipping students with 21st-century skills
2. Professionalizing the teaching workforce
3. Reintroducing civic education in schools

4. Deploying trained guidance counselors nationwide
“We are here for you, to serve you in the best way possible. Do not be afraid to hold us accountable for our actions. You are the hope of this nation,” Atty. Forkpa told students.
Awards were also presented to schools for excellence in the parade:
1. Best Salute: St. Teresa’s Convent Catholic High School (1st), William V.S. Tubman High School (2nd), Emily Foundation Academy (3rd)
2. Best Dressed: Monrovia College
3. Most Disciplined: Ann Sandell Independent High School

The Ministry extended gratitude to Assistant Minister Hon. Sona T. Sesay for her leadership in organizing the celebration, and to development partners for their continued support of Liberia’s Education Sector Plan.
As the red, white, and blue banner waved proudly, the 178th Flag Day celebration concluded with a renewed call for unity, accountability, and national purpose; anchored in the ideals that Liberia’s flag represents.
