July 31, 2025

Monrovia,

On Tuesday, July 29, 2025, the Government of Liberia solemnly commemorated the 35th anniversary of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Massacre—one of the most painful events in Liberia’s history.

Held under the theme, “We Survived to Change the Future,” the memorial service was organized by the Lutheran Church Massacre Survivors Association (LUMASA) at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 14th Street, Sinkor—site of the 1990 tragedy.

Representing His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., the Minister of Education, Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, delivered a heartfelt keynote, conveying the President’s deep condolences and unwavering solidarity with survivors, families, and the Liberian people.

“It was a night of unimaginable horror—when innocent souls seeking refuge in the house of God were brutally taken.

We honor their memory with sorrow and with firm resolve: never again,” Dr. Jallah stated.

President Boakai’s message underscored the need for truth, justice, and remembrance as essential to national healing. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transitional justice, peacebuilding, and civic education to shape a more united and dignified Liberia.

The Minister also referenced the ongoing ceremonial reburials of former Presidents William R. Tolbert and Samuel K. Doe as powerful symbols of national reconciliation and historical reflection.

“This is not just a ceremony—it is a national responsibility to restore honor and embrace our collective past,” she emphasized.

The President called on all Liberians—faith leaders, educators, and citizens—to promote peace, compassion, and mutual respect in building a just and inclusive society.

“May the eternal light of God shine upon the souls of the fallen, and may Liberia be blessed with lasting peace, healing, and unity,” the message concluded.

May their souls rest in perfect peace.

May Liberia rise in hope, love, and renewal.
