Minister of Education Participates in the 9th African Day of School Feeding

Monrovia, Liberia – March 1, 2024: The Minister of Education has embarked on a journey to join distinguished representatives from AU member states, regional economic communities (RECs), embassies,

UN agencies, multilateral institutions, civil society organizations (CSOs), donor agencies, academic institutions, and experts at the 9th African Day of School Feeding. This year’s event is hosted in Bujumbura, Burundi, themed: “Engaging in Home Grown School Feeding to Transform Education Systems for an Inclusive and Prosperous Future of the African Continent.

The Home Grown School Feeding initiative aims to combat macronutrient and micronutrient deficiencies among pre-school, primary school children, and adolescents, thereby enhancing education, nutrition, and health outcomes while reducing morbidity and improving learning capacities.

Objectives of the Commemoration:

1. Strengthening Comprehensive School Meal Programs:

The event aims to enhance human capital by expanding access to education and improving the health and nutrition of children, thereby bolstering local and rural economies.

2. Increased Investment in Holistic Education Interventions:

Discussions will focus on sustainable financing and systematic investment in education interventions, with an emphasis on learning outcomes and reintegration strategies for out-of-school girls.

3. Sharing Experiences and Cooperation:

Member states will exchange experiences on school feeding programs, emphasizing nutrition and education improvement through South-South cooperation.

4. Showcasing Commitments and Achievements: The event will highlight African countries’ commitments to global school meals coalitions and celebrate national achievements, illustrating scalable approaches to address children’s health, nutrition, and education needs.

During the event, Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, the Minister of Education, is set to engage in discussions regarding the sustainability of Liberia’s school feeding program and explore opportunities for enhancing the education sector.
