Ministry of Education & China Geo Dedicate Modern WASH facilities to June L. Moore and Sarah Barclay Public Schools

( April 21, 2023- Monrovia, Liberia)- As part of efforts to promote sanitation in schools across the country, the Government of Liberia in collaboration with China Geo-Engineering Corperation (Ghana) on Friday, April 21 dedicated WASH facilities constructed in two schools in Monsterrado County.

The construction follows a bilateral agreement signed by the Government of Liberia and the People’s Republic of China to construct 50 borehole water wells in 50 selected public schools in the 15 Counties of Liberia in 2017.

On June 26, 2018, the contractor, China Geo completed the borehole water wells intented to provide safe drinking water for Liberian Students in schools.

After three years, China Geo conducted an assessment of the water wells to ascertain it’s functionality and realized that over 90% of the wells were nonfunctional. As a result, China Geo developed a design of an innovative, and climate friendly inclusive solar WASH facilities to provide high yielding safe drinking water and improve sanitation project for Liberian school.

In order to pilot the design, China Geo entered a formal MOU with the Ministry of Education to support the pilot of the new design under the proposed Drinking Water and Sanitation project in two schools in Liberia ( June L. Moore Public School in Gbengbar Town on the Roberts Field Highway and Sarah Barclay Public School in Banjor Virginal ).

The pilot is under two approaches; a pre-fabricated container equipped with all the modern WASH fixtures with solar energy to power the water from a bole hole to supply the drinking water fountain and the reservoir that will supply the flush toilet. The second model has similar features with just a difference between infrastructure which is build purely with bricks.

The two pilots have been completed as a donation to the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Education.

In an effort to replicate the model, the Ministry will solicit government allocation to construct some of the facilities using the design in additional Schools.
