The Ministry of Education Is Expected To Celebrate Africa Day Of School Feeding

( April 27, 2023, Monrovia – Liberia) – In order to increase enrollment and alleviate short-term hunger in schools across the Country, the Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Education, is expected to celebrate Africa Day of School Feeding.

Africa Day of School Feeding is a decision reached by African Heads of States and Government during the 26th summit of the African Union in January, 2016, in support of school feeding.

This year’s celebration is the 8th edition of the event which will be held Friday, April 28, 2023, in Tubmanburg, Bomi County, under the continental theme “Boosting Local Food Procurement Systems and Regional Value Chains for sustained Home-grown school feeding”.

Meanwhile, the objectives of the implementation of the school feeding program in Liberia include:

*increase enrollment

*attendance

*retention and completion rates of students in schools

*alleviate short-term hunger to improve learning capacity

* promote a paradigm shift in attitudes of agriculture through intervention

*enhance nutrition and improve the health of school children and decrease morbidity thus paving the way for healthier life

*contribute to social equity and address gender and social inequities in education through communities, parents and teachers.

The upcoming event which is expected to be held in Tubmanburg, Bomi County, will bring together several institutions including World Food Programme (WFP), Mary’s Meals Liberia, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Health, and Save the Children.

Others expected to grace the occasion are: Ministers and Assistant Ministers, Schools’ authorities, County Education Officers, Civil Society Organizations, County Education Officers, local authorities, students, amongst others.

The Ministry, however, lauded the Government of Liberia, Development Partners, Schools’ Administrations, and others for their continuous support towards the implementation and sustainability of the School’s Feeding Program across the Country.
